Coffee-Chicory Mixture: Revised Labelling Requirements by FSSAI

FSSAI has issued a direction revising the labelling requirements for coffee chicory mixtures. This direction is issued in reference to the order dated 8 August 2025, which introduced a mandatory front of pack box declaration for coffee chicory mixtures under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) First Amendment Regulations, 2025. The implementation of those requirements has now been deferred, and the revised provisions will come into effect from 1 July 2027.

The decision follows representations from the industry highlighting practical challenges in implementing the prescribed declaration, particularly on smaller retail packs. Until the regulations are formally amended, Food Business Operators must follow the interim labelling format specified by FSSAI.

Revised Declaration by FSSAI

The front of the package must clearly declare:

  • COFFEE ….. %
  • CHICORY ….. %

This requirement also applies to instant coffee chicory mixtures.

Font Size Requirements for Coffee Chicory Mixtures

  • Principal Display Panel up to 100 cmยฒ: Minimum font height of 1 mm
  • Principal Display Panel above 100 cmยฒ: Minimum font height of 2 mm

Therefore, food businesses manufacturing, importing, marketing or relabelling coffee chicory mixtures should review their existing packaging and update label artwork in line with the revised requirements.

Furthermore, they should ensure that the percentage declaration appears prominently on the Principal Display Panel using the prescribed font size. Reviewing packaging inventories and coordinating with printing vendors in advance will help businesses achieve a smooth transition before the revised implementation date of 1 July 2027.
