FSSAI approval on high end labs

FSSAI Issues Approved Specifications for High End Laboratory Equipment

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has published a notice on 10 December 2025. It confirms the approved technical specifications for major analytical instruments used in food testing. This update helps laboratories follow consistent and reliable standards across the country.

The notice covers four categories of high end equipment. These are GC-MS MS, LC-MS MS, ICP-MS and ICP-OES. These instruments support testing for pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals and other chemical contaminants. As a result, laboratories can maintain accuracy and meet regulatory expectations.

Annexures with Technical Requirements

FSSAI has not listed all specifications in the main notice. Instead, it has attached four detailed annexures.
Annexure I contains specifications for GC-MS MS.
Annexure II contains specifications for LC-MS MS.
Annexure III contains specifications for ICP-MS.
Annexure IV contains specifications for ICP-OES.
These annexures help laboratories and vendors understand the required features, performance levels and support systems.

Responsibilities for Laboratories and Vendors

FSSAI expects vendors to prove compliance with every point in the annexures. Therefore, they must share performance reports, user references and service details. Laboratories must also verify these details before procurement. This process ensures that the chosen equipment meets all regulatory needs from the start.

Impact on the Food Testing Network

The new specifications bring clarity and uniformity to the food testing system. Because of these standards, results from different laboratories will remain consistent and reliable. In addition, the updated framework improves surveillance and strengthens import control measures. The notice gives laboratories a clear path for selecting high end equipment. By following the annexures, they can choose systems that match national and global expectations. This step supports stronger food safety outcomes and better regulatory compliance.
