FSSAI Advisory No. F. No. RCD-15001/11/2021-Regulatory-FSSAI | Dated 15 October 2026
Introduction
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), through its advisory dated 15 October 2026, has emphasised the importance of maintaining proper temperature conditions while handling, storing and transporting perishable food commodities such as khoa, paneer, meat and fish.
Key Requirements for Food Business Operators
Food Business Operators (FBOs) must ensure compliance with the hygiene and sanitary requirements under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. Key measures include:
- FSSAI directs FBOs engaged in the manufacture, packing, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of the specified perishable food commodities to ensure strict compliance with the following requirements:
- Transport food commodities only in clean, covered and hygienic vehicles or conveyances suitable for food transportation.
- Maintain the prescribed temperature conditions throughout storage and transportation.
- Use only food-grade packaging and suitable secondary packaging materials. Packing or transporting products in gunny bags or other non-food-grade coverings that may compromise product safety should be avoided.
- Protect products from dust, moisture, pests, physical damage and cross-contamination during storage, loading, unloading and transportation.
- Maintain appropriate records and consignment traceability, and produce invoices or other relevant documents whenever demanded by the competent authority.
Monitoring and Compliance
FSSAI has directed the concerned authorities to strengthen inspections and transportation checks. Non-compliance may lead to regulatory action, including seizure and destruction of food, as applicable under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Conclusion
Safe handling, appropriate temperature control, hygienic transportation, suitable food-grade packaging and effective traceability are essential to protect the safety and quality of perishable food commodities. All concerned Food Business Operators and authorities should ensure compliance with the requirements outlined in the FSSAI advisory and the applicable regulatory framework.
