FSSAI simplifies Food Import process

FSSAI-CBIC Integration under SWIFT 2.0 Streamlines Import Clearance in India

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a major step to simplify the process of food imports. It has now linked its Food Import Clearance System (FICS) with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) through the ICEGATE platform. This integration is part of the SWIFT 2.0 initiative, which focuses on faster and smoother import clearance in India. The goal is to reduce delays and make procedures easier for importers in the food sector.

What is SWIFT 2.0 and ICEGATE?

SWIFT 2.0, or the Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade, is a digital system created by CBIC. It enables traders to file all regulatory documents at one place instead of visiting multiple departments. It connects various partner government agencies through the Indian Customs Electronic Gateway, or ICEGATE. ICEGATE serves as CBIC’s digital platform for electronic filing, payments, and tracking of import and export processes.

Improving Efficiency and Transparency in Import Clearance

With FSSAI’s integration into SWIFT 2.0, importers can expect quicker processing and real-time data exchange. All documentation will be submitted and verified online, making the system more transparent and efficient. This change will reduce paperwork and improve coordination between customs and food safety authorities.

Initially, this facility will operate at four Inland Container Depots — ICD Dadri, ICD Star Track, ICD Albatross, and ICD Patparganj. The system will later expand to more ports across India after evaluating its performance during the first phase.

This collaboration supports the government’s vision of promoting ease of doing business. FSSAI aims to make food import clearance more risk-based, with faster approvals for low-risk consignments and stricter checks for high-risk ones. The partnership between FSSAI and CBIC marks a new chapter in digital trade facilitation. It will not only make India’s import system more transparent and technology driven but also ensure safer and faster access to imported food products for consumers.
