FSSAI: First Amendment on Food Safety and Standard(Packaging) Regulation

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2025, which focus on sustainable packaging solutions. This amendment, published on March 28, 2025,
updates the existing Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. The key highlight of the amendment is the introduction of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as an approved material for packaging, storing, carrying, and
dispensing food products. However, its use will be subject to compliance with national standards and guidelines as notified by the Food Authority. This move aligns with India’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible packaging practices.

The amendment was initially proposed in May 2022, with public consultations inviting objections and suggestions. After reviewing feedback, FSSAI has finalized the changes to ensure food safety while promoting eco-friendly packaging alternatives.
The new regulations come into force immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette, ensuring a swift transition towards safe and sustainable food packaging solutions. Businesses and food manufacturers must comply with these revised packaging norms to ensure adherence to regulatory standards. By implementing these amendments, FSSAI reinforces its commitment to public
health, safety, and environmental conservation in India’s food industry.
