Government Revises New Wheat Stock Limits Till March 2026

Centre Revises Wheat Stock Limits to Ensure Food Security and Curb Hoarding

In a decisive step to safeguard food security and prevent artificial scarcity, the Government of India has revised wheat stock limits applicable across in all States and Union Territories, until 31st March 2026. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution announced that this measure is aimed at moderating prices ahead of the festive season and ensuring equitable availability of wheat for all citizens.

Under the revised framework, stock limits for wheat are applicable to traders/Wholesalers, Retailers, Big Chain retailers, and processors. The removal of licensing requirements, stock limits and movement restrictions on specified foodstuffs (Amendment) Order 2025 was issued on 27 May 2025 and was applicable for all states and union Territories.

Government New Revised wheat stock limit

To ensure transparency, all entities are mandated to declare their stock position every Friday on the dedicated wheat stock portal (https://foodstock.dfpd.gov.in). Non-compliance or violation of limits will invite strict punitive action under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. Entities currently holding stocks beyond the prescribed limits must reduce them within 15 days of notification.

Indiaโ€™s wheat production for the 2024-25 crop year stood at 1175.07 LMT, with 300.35 LMT procured in RMS 2025-26 through FCI and State agencies. This procurement is more than sufficient to meet the requirements of the Public Distribution System, Other Welfare Schemes, and market interventions.

The Government reiterated its commitment to closely monitor wheat stock levels to prevent hoarding, stabilize prices, and assure uninterrupted supply, thereby strengthening the nationโ€™s food security architecture

Conclusion

This revised order is a significant step to ensure food security and market stability. All traders, retailers, and processors must check their stock levels immediately and follow the updated limits to avoid penalties.
