FSSAI vegan food amendment 2026 new logo requirements for food packaging compliance in India

FSSAI Notifies Vegan Foods Amendment Regulations 2026

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has introduced an important update for vegan food businesses. The authority notified the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026 through the Gazette of India on 21 May 2026.

This amendment mainly updates the official vegan logo requirements for food packaging. As a result, food businesses must review their existing packaging and labeling systems before the implementation date.

What Is the New FSSAI Vegan Food Amendment?

FSSAI has replaced sub regulation (2) under Regulation 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022. Under the revised rule, every approved vegan food package must carry the prescribed vegan logo in the specified format and dimensions.

The notification also provides detailed logo measurements in millimetres. Therefore, manufacturers must follow the exact specifications while designing or printing labels.

Effective Date of the Regulation

The amendment will come into force on 1 July 2027.

FSSAI has given food businesses enough transition time to update packaging materials, printing designs, and compliance systems. However, companies should begin preparations early to avoid last minute operational issues.

Key Compliance Actions for Food Businesses

Food Business Operators dealing with vegan products should immediately start compliance planning. The following actions will help businesses align with the revised regulation:

• Review all vegan product labels currently in use

• Update packaging artwork according to the new logo specifications

• Coordinate with packaging suppliers and printing vendors

• Verify label compliance before final printing

• Maintain records related to vegan food approvals

Why This Amendment Is Important

India’s vegan food market continues to grow rapidly. Because of this expansion, uniform labeling has become increasingly important for both regulators and consumers.

The revised logo requirement will improve product identification and strengthen consumer confidence. In addition, standardized labeling can reduce misleading claims in the marketplace.

The amendment also supports better regulatory monitoring across the vegan food sector.

Impact on Food Businesses

Manufacturers, importers, marketers, and private label companies must carefully evaluate this amendment. Businesses that fail to update labels before the deadline may face compliance challenges during inspections or approvals.

Therefore, companies should integrate the revised logo specifications into their packaging development process as early as possible.

Conclusion

The Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026 introduce a significant packaging compliance update for vegan food products in India.

Since the revised vegan logo requirement becomes mandatory from 1 July 2027, food businesses should begin implementation planning now. Early action can help companies avoid redesign delays, reduce compliance risks, and maintain smooth market operations.
