FSSAI Reduces Vitamin D2 Sample Size for Import

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory regarding the sample quantity required for imported Vitamin D2.

Revised Sample Quantity for Vitamin D2:

Formerly, as the per the FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS (LABORATORY AND SAMPLE ANALYSIS) REGULATIONS, 2011, Vitamin D2 is categorized under “food not specified,” requiring a sample quantity of 500 grams. However, the concerns were raised regarding this cost of Vitamin D2 is higher, leading to the need to review the sampling size of vitamin D2.

As per new revision, the sample collection size has be reduced, due to the notice petition submitted to FSSAI from the importers as the cost are expensive.

Once the sample are tested and ensured they are safe, the remaining samples needed to be returned to the Importer.

  • Previous Requirement of Vitamin D2: 500 grams
  • New Requirement Vitamin D2: 50 grams, divided into two samples of 25 grams each

Reason for the Revision:

Stakeholders highlighted that the previous requirement of 500 grams was excessive and costly, given the high value of Vitamin D2. In response, FSSAI reduced the sample size to 50 grams to alleviate the financial burden on importers while ensuring sufficient quantity for accurate testing.

Procedure for testing the Vitamin D2 sample:

Authorized Officers are instructed to collect two samples of 25 grams each from imported Vitamin D2 consignments. In accordance with Regulation 9(9) of the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017, if the sample is deemed safe, the second 25-gram sample will be returned to the importer.

This adjustment aims to balance regulatory compliance with the economic considerations of importers, ensuring food safety without imposing undue costs.
