New Delhi, December 2024 โ The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has reclassified packaged drinking water under its “high-risk food category” through an official directive issued on November 29, 2024. This regulatory amendment introduces mandatory FSSAI Audits for Packaged drinking manufacturers.
Packaged Drinking water as “High Risk Food”
Under this FSSAI notification, packaged drinking manufacturers must undergo mandatory FSSAI Third Party Auditing . Central license holders now face annual audits conducted by FSSAI third party agencies. These requirements represent a significant shift from previous regulatory protocols.
The reclassification emerges, when FSSAI eliminated Bureau of Indian Standards certification requirements in October, 2024. The previous dual certification system created challenges for food manufacturers. It had high compliance costs and also caused significant operational delays.
Implications of Packaged Drinking Water – High Risk Status
The designation ensures continued quality assurance despite the removal of BIS certification. FSSAI aims to maintain consumer protection while streamlining regulatory processes for packaged drinking water.
This classification reflects the authority’s risk-based approach to food safety regulation. Products with higher potential health risks receive enhanced scrutiny, while lower-risk categories have simplified procedures.
Industry Compliance Requirements
Manufacturers must establish comprehensive documentation systems and maintain elevated safety standards. Companies should conduct regular self-audits and inspections. These checks ensure compliance with food safety regulations. They also help identify quality control problems early
