FSSAI notice inviting comments on specifications for GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, and ICP-OES laboratory equipment.

FSSAI Invites Comments on Technical Specifications for High-End Laboratory Equipment

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), through a notice dated 18th August 2025, has invited comments from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers on the proposed technical specifications of high-end analytical equipment. Stakeholders have been given time until 25th August 2025 to submit their inputs. These instruments are critical for accurate detection of contaminants, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other food safety hazards across the value chain.

Equipment Under Review

FSSAI is seeking industry inputs on specifications for the following advanced analytical systems:

  • Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS)
  • Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)

FSSAI Submission Process

Comments should be submitted in the prescribed formats (Annexure Iโ€“IV), available at the following links:

Before submission, OEMs/suppliers must also fill in their details using this Google Form.
Completed comments (editable soft copy) should be emailed to:

Key Points for Stakeholders

  • If both an OEM and its supplier submit comments, only the OEMโ€™s feedback will be considered.
  • Submission of comments does not guarantee their acceptance. FSSAI reserves the right to finalize specifications as deemed fit.
  • The specifications cover detailed requirements such as detection limits, scan speeds, gas handling systems, automated validation protocols, warranty and AMC provisions, and compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 and food safety norms.

Important Update

High-end analytical instruments are indispensable for national food testing laboratories. By refining technical specifications through stakeholder consultation, FSSAI aims to:

  • Strengthen testing capabilities for pesticide residues, mycotoxins, antibiotics, heavy metals, and environmental contaminants.
  • Ensure uniformity and quality control across laboratories.
  • Support Indiaโ€™s compliance with global food safety regulations.

This stakeholder consultation offers OEMs and suppliers an opportunity to shape the technical standards of laboratory infrastructure that underpin Indiaโ€™s food safety ecosystem. Timely and technically sound feedback will be critical in ensuring that the finalized specifications align with both regulatory requirements and technological advancements.
