A Nationwide Initiative to Safeguard Food Quality During Festive Season
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a Special Festive Drive to enhance food safety and prevent adulteration during the high-demand months of September and October 2025. This initiative, communicated through an official letter dated 23rd September 2025, urges all State and Union Territory Commissioners, along with Regional Directors, to intensify surveillance and enforcement activities.
Addressing Seasonal Risks in Food Consumption
During festivals like Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, the consumption of sweets, snacks, and dairy products such as ghee, khoa, and paneer increases significantly. This seasonal demand often leads to unethical practices, including food adulteration. Such practices pose serious health risks and weaken consumer trust. To counter this, FSSAI has outlined a targeted strategy to monitor and control food quality across the country.
Key Actions Under the Festive Drive
To ensure effective implementation, FSSAI has recommended several measures:
- Conduct surveillance and enforcement drives in high-risk and sensitive areas.
- Deploy Food Safety on Wheels (FSWs) in busy marketplaces and locations identified through intelligence inputs.
- Facilitate on-the-spot testing of food products to detect adulteration.
- Launch awareness campaigns to educate consumers and reinforce public confidence.
These steps aim to create a visible and proactive safety framework during the festive season.
Mandatory Data Reporting for Transparency
FSSAI has mandated that all inspection and sampling data be recorded on the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCOS) and the Food Safety Compliance Reporting and Inspection System (FoSCORIS). Authorities must complete this data entry by 15th November 2025. This requirement ensures transparency and supports future policy decisions.
Implementation and Oversight
The directive has been issued to Commissioners of all States and Union Territories, as well as Regional Directors of FSSAI. Copies have also been shared with the CEO’s office, the Advisor for Quality Assurance, and the Chief Information Technology Officer for publication on the FSSAI website.
Impact on Consumers
For consumers, this drive offers reassurance. With increased vigilance and real-time testing, they can expect safer food options and greater accountability from vendors. The initiative also encourages informed choices and promotes public awareness about food safety.
Conclusion
FSSAI’s Special Festive Drive is a timely response to seasonal challenges in food safety. By combining enforcement, testing, and public engagement, the initiative aims to protect public health and uphold food standards during India’s most celebrated months.
