SC Grants Last Extension on Front-of-Pack Labelling Rules

What is front-of-pack labeling and why does it matter for public health?

Front-of-pack labeling (FoPL) is now a major focus in Indiaโ€™s push for clearer nutrition labelling. The Supreme Court of India recently gave the Union Government a final three-month deadline. The task? Submit the Expert Committeeโ€™s report on FoPL rules.

This decision was part of the 3S and Our Health Society vs. Union of India case, heard on 15th July 2025.

The goal of this labeling reform is simple. Give consumers easy-to-understand facts about what they eat. Right now, labels are hard to read. Worse, many HFSS (high fat, sugar, and salt) foods carry no front warnings at all. That leads to confusion, poor choices, and false marketing claims.

Indiaโ€™s food labelling system needs to change. And this initiative could be the turning point.

What changes can food manufacturers expect?

With the courtโ€™s final deadline set, the pressure is on. The Expert Committee is expected to propose big changes. These may include:

  • Clear front labels for high fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods
  • Simple and standard nutrition facts
  • Tighter rules for claims like โ€œhealthyโ€ or โ€œnaturalโ€

These steps will likely change how food labelling in India looks. They could help consumers make better decisions. They may also help fight rising lifestyle diseases linked to junk food.

How can brands prepare for compliance?

The Supreme Court was firm: no more delays. The next hearing will happen after the deadline. That means food companies must move fast.

Hereโ€™s what they should do:

  • Track upcoming policies and industry talks
  • Review current product labels
  • Consult with food law experts

Front-of-pack labeling is not just a rule. Itโ€™s a chance to build trust. Companies that act early will lead in compliance and in the eyes of their customers.
