The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has released a draft amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022, proposing key modifications to enhance compliance and certification requirements for vegan food products.
A significant change in the amendment is the introduction of Form-I, which mandates a certification process for vegan food exports. This form must be issued by a recognized authority of the exporting country, ensuring that products labelled as vegan meet regulatory standards. It includes details such as product composition, manufacturing process, storage conditions, and traceability requirements.
The amendment also strengthens compliance by requiring separate storage and production lines for vegan and non-vegan products, or thorough cleaning procedures if shared facilities are used. Additionally, it prohibits animal testing for food safety evaluations, unless required by regulatory bodies. Stakeholders can submit objections or suggestions within 60 days from the notification date by contacting FSSAI via email at regulation@fssai.gov.in. The final regulations will be implemented after considering public feedback.
This amendment aims to enhance consumer trust, prevent contamination, and align India’s vegan food regulations with global standards.
