Apply for a New FSSAI License or Registration with 1 to 5 Years Validity

How to Apply for New FSSAI License

If you are thinking about starting a food business in India, one of the first things you’ll need is a new FSSAI license and for good reason. It’s not just a regulatory formality; it’s your badge of trust, quality, and compliance with India’s food safety standards.

In this article, we’re going to break down the entire FSSAI license application process, eligibility, fees, documents required, and why this small step has big implications for your brand.

What is an FSSAI License?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the body responsible for regulating food safety and hygiene in the country. A Food Safety License is mandatory for anyone involved in food-related businesses, whether you’re a home baker, a cloud kitchen operator, or running a nationwide food chain.

Without a valid FSSAI food license, you are  not only risking legal troubles but also missing out on customer trust because that license number on food packages means you understand what it takes to produce safe food for the consumer.

Eligibility Criteria for FSSAI License

Not every food business needs the same type of FSSAI license. It depends on your business size and type.

Types of FSSAI Licenses:

Basic FSSAI Registration: For small-scale operators (annual turnover below ₹12 lakhs).

State FSSAI License: For medium businesses (turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores).

Central FSSAI License: For large businesses (turnover above ₹20 crores or operating in multiple states).

FSSAI License Fees

The FSSAI (Food Safety and Authority of India) license fees depend on the various aspects of the business. It also depends on the type of license or registration based on the business type and production capacity.

Here’s what you can expect to pay for the yearly FSSAI license fees,

When applying for a new FSSAI license, one crucial step is selecting the right Kind of Business (KoB). This helps the FSSAI determine the nature of your food-related activity whether you manufacture, distribute, store, or sell food items. Picking the correct KoB ensures that your license is processed under the right category, avoiding future compliance issues.

If you’re confused about which KoB to select, don’t worry, we’ve compiled a simplified list below to guide you on what is KoB and how to choose the right one for more clarity.

FSSAI License status check

Applying for an FSSAI License is a key step for any food business, but understanding what each application status means can save you from unnecessary delays or rejection. Here’s a breakdown of the common statuses you might see during the application process:

  • Not Yet Processed: If this status appears, it simply means your application is submitted but has not been reviewed by the authority yet.
  • Reverted for Clarification: When your application is sent back for more information or corrections, it’s marked as ‘Reverted’. You must respond within 30 days to keep your application active.
  • Rejected: Failure to respond to a reverted application or not providing sufficient information can lead to rejection. In such cases, you’ll need to reapply.
  • Under Inspection: At this stage, an FSSAI official will inspect your business premises to ensure compliance with safety and hygiene standards.
  • License Issued: Once your application meets all requirements, the FSSAI License will be approved and available for download from the FoSCoS website.
  • Keeping track of your application status is essential to ensure smooth approval and avoid unnecessary back-and-forth.
